Just a little TLC

Some of the old farmhouses scattered across rural New Zealand have been standing proudly for generations, weathering seasons and stories alike. They’re full of character, creaking floorboards, wide verandas, and timeworn timber that speaks of their history. With just a little TLC, these homes could still be standing strong for many years to come.

Chapels and Churches

Both St Mary’s Anglican Church in Gordonton and the All Hallows Chapel at Southwell School in Hamilton are excellent examples of the stone-built Gothic Revival style, making them great subjects for artistic representation. I greatly enjoyed drawing both of these fine examples of Gothic architecture, particularly their intricate details, including the stained-glass windows.

Thames Coast Road, Coromandel

The narrow, winding Thames Coast road sits between bush-covered hills and water that almost brushes the road. Small bays come and go and Pōhutukawa hang overhead — Beautiful New Zealand scenery stuck in time.

Napier, Hawkes Bay

Napier City is well known for its many Art Deco landmarks, which made it a great source of inspiration. The clean lines, geometric shapes, decorative details of the buildings, and the presence of 1930s cars provided plenty of interesting subject matter. Walking through the city, I found that the distinctive architecture added character and style to each drawing, making the experience both enjoyable and creatively rewarding.

Ruakura Research Centre,Hamilton

The weathered, crooked fences and gates, leafy green trees, and open paddocks create scenes full of character and inspiration. Set among this landscape is the Ruakura Research Centre on the outskirts of Hamilton, a prominent agricultural and food science hub.

Hahndorf, South Australia

There was so much subject matter to capture when I visited Hahndorf, the small German-settled town near Adelaide, South Australia. With the beautiful stone buildings lining the main street, there was no shortage of inspiration. It’s well worth a visit.

Omokoroa, Bay of Plently

I recently spent an overcast day in Omokoroa, in the Bay of Plenty. Even though the weather was a bit grey and cold, I still managed to capture some great photos. There were plenty of dinghies lined up along the shoreline, their shapes and colours making perfect subject matter. Despite the chill, Omokoroa had a quiet charm that left me feeling inspired.
